George William Gibbs, Sr., 74 of Abingdon, passed away at 3:55 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2022 at his home with his loving wife, Bonnie, at his side.

George was born April 18, 1948 in Galesburg to Jean Hunnicutt Gibbs.  He married Delores Munson and from their marriage were born his two sons.  He later married Bonnie Lewis on April 16, 1983 in Abingdon.

George is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Bonnie; his two sons, Shawn (Dawn) Gibbs and George W. (Tonya) Gibbs, Jr. all of Smithshire; two grandchildren, Addie (Logan) Conrady of Waterloo, Wisconsin and Dylan Gibbs of Smithshire; one great-grandson, August Conrady; and one brother, Bill Gibbs of Rio; and his fur friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and his sister-in-law, Jolene Gibbs, and many dear pets.

He grew up in Galesburg and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1966.  He had also lived in Smithshire and for the past 42 years, he had lived in Abingdon.  He worked many different jobs in his lifetime but was best known as “The Helpful Hardware Man” from his days at Moore Ace Hardware in Abingdon.  He later owned and operated B & G Lock and Key in Abingdon.  He also worked at Adams Pressed Metal in Galesburg and last worked at Xpac in Bartonville before retiring.  He was a member of the New Harvest Church in Abingdon and the Christian Motorcyclists Association.

He was extremely proud of his sons and their families.  He had more extended family than he could count and “Uncle George” was loved and will be missed.  He was a friend and neighbor to all, a brother and son to Bonnie’s family.  And Bonnie said, “He was a good and faithful husband, he loved the USA and he loved his Lord and Savior”.

Cremation will be accorded.  Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the Cherry Grove Cemetery near Abingdon. Rocky Lester will officiate.  After the service and in celebration of George’s life, the family will receive relatives and friends in a time of food and fellowship at the New Harvest Church Fellowship Room, 835 W. Martin St. in Abingdon.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
