H.K. “Kenny” Olmsted Jr., 92, of Galesburg, died Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at home.

He was born January 11, 1930, in Galesburg, the son of H.K. and Grace (Corson) Olmsted Sr.  He married Margaret L. Bruyn on March 21, 1969, in Galesburg.  She preceded him in death on September 30, 2016.

He is survived by three children, Stuart Olmsted, Lori (Richard) Van Winkle, and Kathrine Santamaria; two step-sons, David Bruyn and Dick Bruyn; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a brother, Rodney Olmsted; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Olmsted.  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Karen Cisco on September 8, 2002; and a brother, Donald Olmsted on February 21, 2009.

After graduating from high school in 1949, Kenny enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951.  He was an instructor with the Air Training Command with the rank of Staff Sargeant.  He was honorably discharged in 1955.

Upon returning to Galesburg in 1955, he was hired in November of that year as a fireman for the City of Galesburg.  He retired in 1982 as Assistant Chief. 

Kenny was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association for 30 years.  As someone who had a love of aviation, he was involved with the National Stearman Fly-In from the early days, lending his time and support to the organization.

He was a member of the Illinois Retired Firefighters, the American Legion, First Lutheran Church, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Kenny loved his family and enjoyed family cookouts and gatherings.

Cremation will be accorded.  Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services of Galesburg.  Military honors will be offered at 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service with Rev. Glen Bocox officiating.  Memorial contributions may be made to the National Stearman Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
