West Central Heat Softball Makes History With Win over Newman Central Catholic

The West Central Heat softball team was trying to make some history last night in their Class 1A Sectional Semifinal match up against Sterling Newman Central Catholic at Williamsfield High School. The Heat were trying to get to a sectional championship game for the first time in program history.

It was no surprise the game turned into an impressive pitching duel between West Central freshman Addie Seitz and Newman sophomore Ady Waldschmidt. Neither pitcher would allow a run through the first seven innings. Actually, Seitz didn’t allow a runner to reach 3rd base until the top of the 6th inning. West Central would get runners in scoring position in the 2nd and 3rd innings but couldn’t get a big hit to give them an early lead. After a 3-up, 3-down top of the 8th and a strikeout to start the bottom of the 8th, West Central lead-off hitter Brynna Seitz reached on a bloop single just over diving Comet shortstop Jess John’s head. Seitz would steal second for her 48th stolen base of the season during the next hitter in the lineup’s at-bat, Addie Seitz. The Comets decided to intentionally walk Addie Seitz to put runners on first and second with one out. Waldschmidt then induced a strikeout of McKenzy Ludington for the second out. That put the game in the hands of junior Bailey Ryan with runners on first and second and two outs in a scoreless game. Here’s the call of the final pitch of the game.

The Heat improve to (27-6) overall and will play another Three Rivers Conference team in Peru St. Bede in Friday night’s sectional championship game. St. Bede beat Ridgewood 4-3 in 9 innings in another walk-off situation in the second semifinal last night in Williamsfield. St. Bede is (20-3) and finished on top of the TRAC East Division with a record of (10-2). The sectional championship is slated for 7:00 on Friday night at Williamsfield High School.
