Mary Kathleen Knapp (Wataga), 87, passed June 26th at Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, IL.

Kathy was born on March 10, 1935 in Galesburg, the daughter of Warren E. and Frances J (Regan) Thomas. Kathy graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1953. She met George L. Knapp at the American Legion Hall where he asked her to dance. They were married September 11, 1954 in Galesburg and enjoyed 63 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on February 21, 2018.

Kathy worked for May Company, Linda’s Maternity as manager at the Sandburg Mall (she always stated she was qualified for that), and was a Sovereign House consultant before she and George started a wholesale gift and floral business – Knapco Distributors, servicing accounts in three states. This business transitioned into the Hawthorne Centre Craft Mall and then Hawthorne Centre Craft and Antique Malls in Galesburg. All vendors, employees and those who shopped there knew her for her never ending smile and laugh. Throughout her years Kathy also served as a PTA President, supported local school events during her children’s youth, she was a member the Galesburg Business Network, was an active member of the Knox County Democratic Party for many years, serving as President of Democratic Women, served on Knox County Scenic Dive Board and the Galesburg Board of Tourism.

Kathy and George always had a large garden with Kathy canning and preserving all that she could. There was always a pan of brownies on her counter for all to enjoy. She enjoyed Big Band music and dancing with George. She loved Alan Jackson’s dimples, and his music tapping her toe to the beat.  A highlight for her was getting to meet him via a backstage pass. She and George were avid GHS Basketball fans for many years only fading as they made time for their grandchildren’s many activities. Kathy constructed hundreds of jigsaw puzzles in her later years. Family was everything to Kathy, she cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great granddaughter.

Left to cherish the memories of her beautiful smile and wonderful laughter are 4 children; Mary Anderson of Normal, IL, Barb (Art) Lindquist of Galesburg, Tom (Julie) Knapp of Galesburg, Georgia (Dennis) Lepisto of Wataga, five grandchildren Aaron Anderson, Caleb Lepisto, Chelsea (FJ) Minor, Tristan (JayCee) Lepisto, and Jonathan Knapp; son-in-law Bob Athy , one great granddaughter Lilah Lepisto. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, son Timmy, daughter Patti Athy, and son-in-law William R. Anderson.

Cremation rights have been accorded. There will be a graveside service on July 16, 2022 at 10 am. Burial of cremated remains will be at Oneida Cemetery, Oneida, IL.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  Memorials may be made to the Knox County Nursing Home.  Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com
