Mrs. Violet “Rose” (Kane) Martz, 83, of Oneida, Illinois, passed away peacefully 12:50 p.m. Tuesday June 14, 2022 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, with her daughter and one sister by her side.

She was born March 4, 1939 in Galesburg, the daughter of Jack and Linda (Dawson) Kane. She married George D. Martz Jr. on February 16, 1957. He preceded her in death on December 28, 2000.

She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Bailey of Oneida; sisters, Phyllis Swigart of Knoxville, Illinois; Linda Lou (and Gary) Rodgers of Galesburg; and Candy (and Mike) Holeman of Cross City, Florida; several nieces and nephews; and her cat, Lucky. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Barbara Sargeant.

Rose graduated from Galesburg High School in 1957. She lived in the Galesburg area all of her life and last lived in the country near Oneida. She enjoyed the outdoors, and loved flowers, especially her “black” tulips and irises, and of course her roses. In her earlier years, she worked at Walgreens, Pizza Hut, Eagle Grocery Store, and Wagoner Printing Company. She had been a bowler and tennis player and liked to ride bicycles.

In later years, she could be found at a number of musical events, including being a loyal supporter of Gloria’s many music endeavors. She always had a song on her lips and knew the lyrics to a great number of songs, always finding a lyric to fit any given situation. She attended Bethel Baptist Church with her daughter. She liked to watch vintage game shows and especially liked to watch Jeopardy. Everyone knew not to call during Jeopardy.

The final Jeopardy answer is: I’ll see you in heaven

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday June 25, 2022 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Lee Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday June 24, 2022 at the chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church.
