From the greens at WIU to John Deere green, Western Illinois University Supply Chain Management alumna and former Leatherneck golfer Allison Farrell got to live out a dream of golfing at the John Deere Classic last summer with none other than John Deere CEO John May serving as her caddy.

“This was an absolute dream for me,” said Farell.

This opportunity came to Farell after May created a contest for John Deere employees to “take the tee” with him where the participant would be able to show their skills through a round of golf. The catch was May would caddy for the participant chosen. Farrell was chosen out of more than 30 applicants.

“My passion is golf,” said Farrell. “I was so ecstatic to play in the pro-am and be in front of my family, friends, teammates and peers.”

Farrell’s career has shifted with John Deere after completing an internship through the Supply Chain Management program in 2015. Since then, she has held multiple positions within the company, most recently being a production supervisor in the cylinder division.

Farrell speaks with 2019 John Deere Classic champion Dylan Frittelli.

“I am very thankful to have gained the experience I did at WIU. The outstanding professors have prepared me well for a career at John Deere,” said Farrell. “In July of 2021, I transitioned to a new position within John Deere as a supply base manager.”

Although Farrell spends a great deal of time focusing on her family, career and coaching golf, she often reflects on the experience and how it has impacted her life.

“I will never forget the first hole. I looked out into the crowd and saw my family, friends and peers cheering me on,” said Farrell. “Additionally, my goal is to inspire young girls to go out and play golf; to me this experience was a big win.”

Some of her fondest memories of the experience were backed by many years of volunteering with her family at the John Deere Classic.

“My advice to WIU students is to work hard and be dedicated to whatever your future holds. Passion and perseverance go a long way when working to achieve your dreams.”
