George D. Brown, 93, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, July 7, 2022, in his home.

He was born May 10, 1929 in Monmouth, the son of Fred M. and Lillian G. (Earp) Brown. He was raised and educated in Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School in 1947. George joined the Army 46th Construction Engineers on March 6, 1951. He fought in the Korean War from 1952 to 1953 as a Private 1st Class.

George began working for Lenox Twp. In March of 1953.  He served as Road Commissioner from 1969 to April 1997. He was a member of the West Central Illinois Highway Commissioners Association holding various positions; a member of the Roseville American Legion Post 614 and its Honor Guard.

He married Shirley Lee (Siegrist) Brown on August 27, 1950, at the Oak Street Baptist Church Parsonage, Burlington, IA. She preceded him in death after 62 years of marriage on July 5, 2013.

George enjoyed woodworking, especially making flag cases for his fellow veterans. He was an avid Chicago White Sox and Bears fan. Through the years he enjoyed boating, camping, motorcycling and watching all the sporting events his grandchildren were involved in.

Surviving George are his children, Linda (Gary) Johnson, German Valley, IL; Carol Totten, Galesburg; Cindy (George) Mohr, Alexis; 6 grandchildren, Bryan (Lauren) Mohr, Brad (Hilary) Mohr, Todd (Reta) Johnson, Zachary (Kimmie) Totten, Morgan Johnson and Erin (Matt) Totten-Jones; 5 great-grandchildren, Cameron, Maddox and Harrison Totten. Cade Johnson and Cruz Rodriguez and baby Mohr expected in November.

Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Beverly Siegrist, TN; Niece Cynthia (Mark) Blaydes, AZ and Scott (Lori) Siegrist, TN and great-nieces, Marlayna (Doug) Rogers and Terra Waggoner, IA., great-nephews, Tim Pfeiff, FL and Andrew Pfeiff, NB; and special long-time friends, Robert & Darlene Lair Family, Robert & Audrey Sprout Family; the Jim & Lois Brechbiel Family and his Strom Center friend, Pam Hines.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022 in the Lenox Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2022 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Roseville American Legion Post 614 and Auxiliary and left in the care of the funeral home. Wise Family Funeral Home, Roseville, is in charge of the arrangements.
