The Illinois State Police and local police and sheriff’s departments are warning the public to not engage in aggressive driving behaviors. With increased reports of road rage incidents, McDonough County Sheriff Nick Petitgout offers these reminders to avoid confrontations while on the roadways:
“A lot of it comes down to being non-confrontational with people. If someone does stop their vehicle and gets out to approach you, simply drive away from them and don’t look at them. If someone does follow you, you can always drive to your closest police department, sheriff’s office, state police headquarters; most of the time they will stop following you if they see you doing that; just simply being safe. Also, keep in mind you can call 9-1-1 while you are driving. It is a great way for us to locate you as well. Anytime you call 9-1-1 from a cellphone, we are able to have an exact GPS coordinate of where you are.”
Furthermore, Sheriff Petitgout says if you have a tailgater, simply make a turn and go around the block or pull into a gas station or business to allow the vehicle to go around. As for construction zones, always be aware for people slowing down, sudden stops, or erratic driving.
