Roger Harley Stegall, 90 of Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon, and former Mayor of Abingdon, passed away at 8:43 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

  He was born June 11, 1932 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, the son of Harley C. and Eliza Marie (Bozman) Stegall.  He married Evelyn Johnson and they later divorced.  In 1970, he married Annette Marie Parr at the former Abingdon Congregational Church.

  Roger is survived by his loving wife, Annette; his loving children, Timothy Stegall of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Gail Baker Le of Princeville, Beth (Erby) Strickland of Jacksonville, Florida and Matthew (Michelle) Stegall of Springfield; six grandchildren, Mark Stegall, Darcy (Dan) Eberle, Eric (Lora Spahr) Baker, Andrew (Ashley) Le, Ian Le and Amie Stegall; eleven great-grandchildren, Ryan, Nicole and Lance Baker; Emmy (Jeff) Arthur, Ruby, Phoebe, Paige and Claire Williams, Drew Stegall, Tesla Le, and Gwynevere Le; one great-great grandchild, Lucas Arthur and one on the way; one brother, Ronald Stegall of Naples, Florida; nieces and nephews and their families.

  He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, June Franklin.

  Roger grew up in Abingdon and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1950.  He was a member of the state golf team and the undefeated football team in high school.  He worked in Electrical and was Supervisor of skilled trades for N.T.N. Bower in Macomb and later transferred to Hamilton, Alabama, retiring in 1987 at the age of 55.  He also lived in Tupelo, Mississippi before returning to Abingdon in 2002.  While in Abingdon, he was elected Mayor and served his community proudly.  He has lived in Galesburg since 2017.  He was a member of the former Congregational Church in Abingdon.  He enjoyed motorcycles, flying and working in his workshop.  He was a member of a singing quartet in high school and still enjoyed singing.  He was a member of the Abingdon Historical Society.

  Cremation will be accorded.  To celebrate his life, visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2022 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel followed by his memorial service at 2 p.m..  Private inurnment will be at the Abingdon Cemetery at a later date.
