Local Law Enforcement Have Concerns for Public Safety in the New Year

The SAFE-T Act was signed into law by Governor Pritzker in January of 2021, implementing reform to aspects of the criminal justice system, including pre-arrest diversion, policing, pretrial, sentencing, and corrections. State Representative Norine Hammond explains this bill is a reaction to challenges encountered across the country:

Addressing a wide variety of criminal justice issues, one of the provisions to the SAFE-T Act is the Pretrial Fairness Act, which will end cash bail in Illinois January 1 of 2023. McDonough County Sheriff Nick Petitgout says three main items need changed before the first of the year:

The 102nd General Assembly will enter their veto session in mid-November and will run through early December.
