Story by Prairie Communication Intern, Kadin Rogers:

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans continued their 2022-2023 football season campaign in Sherrard this week, taking on the TRAC West rival Tigers. Both teams were in need of a win after losing streaks, but it was the Titans who would win in a big way over Sherrard during their homecoming week, by a score of 51-20.

Monmouth-Roseville would open the game with the ball, after Sherrard deferred to the second half. The Tigers defense would make the first play of the game however, forcing a Titans fumble and taking over inside the M-R 25. They would waste no time cashing in on the fumble, as quarterback Holland Anderson hit freshman receiver Carter Brown for the 18 yard score on the third play of the short drive. The Titans would find an immediate response however, with a 64 yard touchdown run from C.J Johnson, on the first play of the corresponding Titans drive. The failed 2 point conversion would put the game at 7-6 Sherrard. Sherrard’s offense would stay in rhythm, moving down the field inside the Titans 10 yard line, but the Monmouth-Roseville defense would keep the Tigers out of the endzone on a 4th down stop. The Titans would take the ball to Sherrard’s 35 yard line before the first quarter clock hit zeroes.

M-R would open the second quarter by finishing off their offensive drive with a 4 yard touchdown from C.J Johnson and 2 point conversion from Silas Braun to take a 14-7 lead. The Titans defense feeding off the energy, would get their first takeaway on a forced fumble, giving the ball right back to the offense, which the offense would take advantage of, going down the field and scoring from 7 yards out on the the third C.J Johnson rushing touchdown. After giving up 22 unanswered points, Sherrard would get back to the endzone on a short touchdown run from Bailey Nelson, set up on a long pass from Anderson to Brown. Both teams would trade final drives that would end in turnovers, and the first half of play ended with the Titans leading 22-14.

The Tigers would open the second half of play receiving the opening kickoff, but it was the Titans defense forcing a punt giving the offense great field position on the ensuing return. The Titans would take advantage, with the fourth touchdown run from C.J Johnson this time from 15 yards out. A Sherrard punt on the next drive, would give the ball right back to Monmouth-Roseville and they would drive down to the 1 yard line, punching it on a goal line touchdown run from Braun. The following 2 point conversion would give M-R a 38-14 lead.

The Tigers down three scores and in need of points to keep pace with the Titans would get sacked on 4th and 15, turning it over on downs with over 9 minutes to play in the game. Jerome Jackson would add on to the lead quickly, with a long 41 yard touchdown carry, bringing the score to 44-14. M-R would eclipse 50 points on the next Sherrard offensive drive, with C.J Johnson taking a 64 yard interception back the other way for his 5th total score of the game. Sherrard would get in the endzone one more time on an Isaac Novitske touchdown run, and the Titans would run the rest of the clock out to seal the 51-20 win.

For the Tigers, Holland Anderson would complete 14 of his 22 attempts for 266 yards a touchdown and an interception. Bailey Nelson would lead the way rushing with 55 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown, with Carter Brown leading in receiving with 10 catches, 176 yards and a touchdown. For the Titans, Silas Braun would go 1/4 for 5 yards with an interception, but ran for 119 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. C.J Johnson would lead the way in rushing would 242 yards and 4 touchdowns on 15 attempts. Stats courtesy of Michael Gooding. The Titans even their record at 2-2, and will host rival Rockridge next week on Friday night.
