The Monmouth-Roseville Titans were back at home for Saturday night action at Coach Dobry Field, taking on the Morrison Mustangs. Both Morrison and Monmouth-Roseville took losses last week with the Titans falling in Spring Valley and the Mustangs falling at Kewanee, but it was Morrison who got the bounce back win, taking down the Titans by a close score of 18-16.

Morrison would open the game with the ball and start inside Titan territory off a good kickoff return, but they were unable to get anything going and were forced to punt after a three and out. A good Mustangs punt would pin Monmouth-Roseville at their own 4 yard line, and the Titans would ride the run game into Mustang territory but they would turn the ball over on a fumble. M-R would get the ball right back however, after C.J Johnson forced the ball out and Juan Andrade recovered. The offense for M-R would capitalize off this turnover and good field position, scoring the first points of the game on a quarterback run from Silas Braun and a 2 point conversion from C.J Johnson. Morrison’s offense would respond on the next drive, marching down the field and scoring to open the second quarter on a touchdown run by Brady Anderson, they would fail the two point conversion to keep the score at 8-6.

After a Titans punt, the Mustangs would control the time of possession in the second quarter, slowly picking their way inside the Titans red zone with just 3 seconds left. The M-R defense would step up in a big way however, with defensive lineman Ethan Davis sacking quarterback Danny Mouw to end the 1st half of play at 8-6 in favor of the Titans.

Monmouth-Roseville would open up the second half with the ball but Morrison’s defense would force a three and out and block a punt to set their offense up with great field position and a chance to score which they would take advantage of with a 3 yard touchdown from fullback Carson Straiting. Now trailing for the first time in the game, the Titans would be set up at midfield after a kick out of bounds penalty, and retake the lead on a 17 yard touchdown from Jerome Jackson. The two point conversion from Braun would push the Titans to a 16-12 lead. Continuing a trend in the game for both teams, Morrison would start in great field position near midfield, they would quickly move down into the Titans redzone, scoring on a 14 yard touchdown from Danny Mouw to Brady Anderson. This would put the Mustangs back on top 18-16(failed 2 pt conversion). The Titans corresponding ended in a mishandled snap and fumble back to the Mustangs, Morrison would the ball down to the 11 yard line before the 3rd quarter whistle blew.

Morrison would open the final quarter of play faced with a 4th down on the 11 yard line of the Titans, which they would convert on a Carson Straiting 2 yard carry. The Titans defense would come up big once again however, with safety Jerome Jackson jumping the route and picking off Danny Mouw. Jackson’s return would set the Titans offense up at their own 40 yard line. The M-R offense would get inside Morrison territory but failed to convert an eventual 4th and 9 go for it call. The Mustangs offense ran as much time as they could off the clock, but a turnover on downs at the Titans 30 with 1 minute and 19 seconds would give M-R one last chance with no timeouts. The Titans pivotal final chance would get inside the 10 after a crucial first down conversion from Braun to Johnson. With 2 seconds left Braun threw one final pass to the back of the end zone, but it was broken up and Morrison would narrowly hold on to the 18-16 win.

For the Mustangs, Danny Mouw went 2 of 4 passing with 34 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Brady Anderson led the way in rushing with 91 yards on 16 carries and Chase Newman led receiving with 2 catches and 34 yards. For the Titans, Silas Braun would go 7 of 12 passing fort 88 yards. C.J Johnson led the team in both receiving and rushing with 76 on the ground and 37 through the air. Stats courtesy of Michael Gooding. The Titans will be back on the road next week, traveling to Sherrard.
