Registration is now open for this year’s one-day Big Pink Volleyball Tournament, which begins at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7.

Participants are encouraged to register online by Wednesday, Oct. 5. Team registration is $30. The event is scheduled to run through 4 p.m. and games will take place in the main gym of the Student Recreation Center.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Big Pink at WIU, which is a philanthropic event co-sponsored by Campus Recreation and Thompson Hall. Money raised this year will benefit Linda’s Fund at McDonough District Hospital.

Big Pink was started in 2002, by retired WIU Campus Recreation Associate Director Judy Yeast. The idea sparked tournaments on campuses of at least 15 other universities across the country.

The games feature a four-foot wide, hot pink volleyball and teams must have a minimum of six players and a maximum of eight (two alternates) for each game. Teams can be co-ed or single gender.

Over the years, more than $125,000 has been brought in through the tournament to benefit breast cancer charities. In addition to fielding a team for an event, organizers have an online donation section available.
