Scots Men’s Soccer Rallies for 2-2 Draw

The Monmouth College men’s soccer team started a four-game week with a 2-2 road draw against Principia College on Monday night. The game was played under the lights at Principia Upper School after originally being scheduled for a Saturday afternoon game.

The Panthers took the lead early with a goal off a corner kick and doubled their lead inside the first half hour. The Scots got on the board late in the first half as senior Reid Sondgeroth (Mapleton, Illinois) scored the first Monmouth goal of the season.

The game was still tied 2-1 into the second half. The Scots got even midway through the half when Hiroto Monden (Sapporo, Japan) scored his first career Monmouth goal.

“The guys didn’t give up all game,” said coach Ian Hatleli..” We worked as hard as we could and we got the result from working hard.”.

Neither team scored the rest of the way and the game ended in a 2-2 draw, the first tie of the season for Monmouth. Under the new NCAA rules implemented this season, there is no overtime or penalty kicks in regular season games.

We picked it up after a few early mental mistakes,” said Hatleli. “I’m proud of the way we switched mentally and played as a team. We did our jobs harder and fought back to get the draw and that gives us something to build on.”

The Scots will host Illinois Wesleyan at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. They finished the weekend with two games at the Robbie Dreher Classic, hosted by Wabash in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Monmouth faces Webster on Saturday and Fontbonne on Sunday.
