Jerry Strope, 89, of Galesburg, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family at 6:27 AM on Monday, October 10, 2022.

He was born on August 11, 1933 at his grandparents’ farm house in Scott County, Illinois, the son of Virgil Strope and Martha Ellen Strope-Hickox.  He was reared and educated in the Jacksonville area.  After high school, he enlisted in the United States Airforce and proudly served his country for nine years.  He worked many jobs throughout his life, most notably owning and operating his own sign painting business, “Jerry Strope Sign Painting” in Galesburg for many years.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 61 years, Sharon Strope of Galesburg; a son, Robert Strope of Galesburg; a daughter, Laura Strope of Cameron, Illinois; two grandchildren: Cody Strope, Marissa Meyer; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Janice Smith.

Cremation rites will be accorded.  A private graveside service will be held at a later date at the East Linwood Cemetery in Galesburg, Rev. Jordan Knight officiating.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A very special thanks to Hospice Compassus, Senior Caring and the Veterans Administration for their support.
