Mary E. Carruthers, 41, of Galesburg, died on Friday, October 21, 2022, at the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago.

She was born to Thomas and Glenda (Akers) Carruthers on November 24, 1980, in Galesburg. Mary graduated from Galesburg High School in 1999. She then attended and received her associate’s degree from Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg. Mary later attended Park University in Missouri, where she received her bachelor’s degree in social psychology and criminology. She was employed as a Drug Counselor at Bridgeway, then moved to the Knox County Courthouse as a Probation Officer for Drug Court. Mary recently moved up to a Probation Officer for the courts.

She is survived by her parents, Tom and Glenda Carruthers of Galesburg; two daughters, Johniyah and Johnalyn Holman of Galesburg; a son, J.T. Holman of Galesburg; a brother, Tyson Carruthers of Lusby, Maryland; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Mary was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and most of all a proud mother. Her children, the “Holman Trio”, were the most important thing in her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and going to dinner with friends. Mary would put others before herself and was always willing to help anyone in need. She will be missed deeply by all who knew her.

Cremation will be accorded. A memorial visitation will be held from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg. Family requests casual dress for the visitation. A celebration of life will take place at the Thomas Legacy Center immediately following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family to be designated to a college trust fund for her children. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com.
