The Monmouth College football team throttled Lawrence University 62-6 on Saturday as part of Homecoming Weekend at April Zorn Stadium. The Scots are now 3-1 on the season, 3-0 in Midwest Conference play.

The Scots got the ball to start the game and scored in 29 seconds on a two-play drive. Devin Lawrence (Hawthorne, Florida) put the Scots up 6-0 with a 49-yard touchdown run. On third down of the first Vikings drive, Nick Harris (Winter Haven, Florida) picked off a pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown and the Cody Szelc (Riverview, Florida) extra point made it 14-0.

The second Monmouth drive took four plays to score. Riley Fetterer (Milan, Illinois) completed a 54-yard catch-and-run touchdown to Dylan Bone (Jacksonville, Illinois). The Scots put one more score on the board in the first quarter. Right guard Matthew Shimko (Jacksonville, Florida) lined up at fullback and plunged into the end zone from one yard out for a 28-0 lead.

Fetterer’s day was over after a quarter and Carter Boyer (Carthage, Illinois) led a touchdown drive to start the second quarter. After two completed passes, Boyer found Nate Thornton (Peoria, Illinois) for a 12-yard touchdown pass. The Vikings punted and Boyer took the SCots down the field again. This time, Marcus Albers (Springfield, Illinois) scored on a 1-yard run for a 42-0 Scots lead.

McKade Brooks (Astoria, Illinois) picked up a 37-yard touchdown run for a 48-0 lead. Xavier Cooper (Springfield, Illinois) picked off a Lawrence pass and returned it to the 6-yard line with 21 seconds left in the half. Boyer found Jake Uryasz (Farmington, Illinois) over the middle for a 55-0 halftime lead as Daevon Gaines (Chicago, Illinois) made the extra point.

Ashton Summers (Mt. Zion, Illinois) took over at quarterback in the second half. Lawrence fumbled a punt return and the Scots kept possession at the Lawrence 28. However the Vikings blocked a field and took off on their longest drive of the game. The drive carried into the fourth quarter and Lawrence scored on a 15-yard pass, but missed the extra point.

On the next Vikings drive, Hunter DeVena (Galesburg, Illinois) blocked a punt for the Scots. The ball was picked up by Sam Phillips (Cape, Coral, Florida) and returned 45 yard for a touchdown, R.J. Ahten (Princeville, Illinois), Monmouth’s third kicker of the game, converted the extra point for a 62-6 lead. Neither team scored over the final 9:38 of the game.
