Effective January 1 of 2023, single and multi-family homes will be required by law to have 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms installed, says Monmouth Fire Chief Casey Rexroat:
“If you own just a house, instead of having the smoke alarms with removable batteries in them, homeowners are required to install a new alarm that features 10-year sealed batteries smoke alarms. We have actually been installing these for a while at the fire department through the Red Cross and the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshall. So if you have the removable battery ones, it is time to get rid of those and move to the sealed battery, the long-life battery.”
If your home has wired smoke alarms, Chief Rexroat says that is one exception to this law and those do not have to be upgraded to the 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms.
