More than 13-hundred new attorneys joined the legal profession at a swearing-in ceremony this week. The lawyers taking the oath passed the bar exam back in July. Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis spoke to the group about showing compassion, since they will often start a case during a tumultuous time in their client’s lives.
“There has been a death in the family or terrible accident or a crime has been committed or people’s financial lives are hanging in the balance. The service you provide is being able to learn and use the skills that you have learned in law school and move your clients from a time of crisis to a place of peace.”
The new admittees bring the total number of licensed attorneys in Illinois to about 97-thousand.
