Creature Feature with Owls

The City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation’s Second Saturday program is free each month at Lakeside Nature Center.  This Saturday, participants will experience hands-on nature fun when discovering a hidden surprise inside owl pellets.  Participants will learn all about the life of the amazing owl.  There are also guided hikes and various activities available at Lakeside Nature Center, 1033 S. Lake Storey Road.  Come and go as you please.

Learn to Swim- Holiday Session

Enroll in the City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation Department’s Holiday Session of Learn to Swim and take advantage of smaller holiday classes for more one on one instruction.    Space is limited so register soon.  Swim instruction is a skill that lasts for a lifetime, and makes a great holiday gift for someone you love.  Learn to Swim for Safety, and love to swim for life.  Don’t miss this special holiday session.  There may even be a special visit from Santa during this holiday season.

Galesburg Parks and Recreation

Date:  November 14, 2022 – February 19, 2023

Day/Time:  Practice on Mondays and Thursdays 4:30-5:30 p.m. 

Location:  Hawthorne GymnasticsFee:  $60.00 per person
The City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation is back in the game with a Youth Basketball Junior Streak program designed to teach fundamentals, sportsmanship and game play.  Practice is twice a week with weekend games and one tournament scheduled.  This team is for boys in grades 3rd-4th or 5th-6th and girls in 3rd-4th or 5th-6th grades.  Practices are held on Mondays and Thursdays, 4:30-5:30 p.m. at Hawthorne Gymnasium starting November 14, 2022 and games starting in December.  The tournament is in February.  Games will be played at Hawthorne Gymnasium and other facilities around the Galesburg area.  Fee is $60 per player and includes jerseys.

G-Force Fall Volleyball Clinics

Day:  Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 

Time:  5:00-6:00 p.m. for 2nd, 3rd and 4th Grades / 6:00-7:00 p.m. for 5th-6th Grades

Fee:  $45.00 per participant

The City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation is offering youth volleyball clinics to focus on developing the fundamentals of volleyball through individual skills training.  Young athletes will learn the value of teamwork and good sportsmanship through a variety of fun and engaging volleyball centered activities.  Late Registration is allowed, but anyone registered after October 30, 2022 will not be guaranteed a shirt as part of the clinic.  The clinic is held on the multipurpose courts at Lakeside Recreation Facility, 1033 S. Day/Time:  Friday, 4:30-6:00 p.m.

Location:  Lakeside Nature Center, 1033 S. Lake Storey RoadFee:  $5.00 person 
The City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation has a special Owl Prowl planned at Lakeside Nature Center, 1033 S. Lake Storey Road.  Owls are active at dusk, so participants will be on the prowl to find an owl or tow.  Learn tips on how to spot these silent hunters.  Please wear dark, non reflective clothing.  A small flashlight can be brought for walking the trails, but note it may disturb any owls.  No flash photography allowed when on the prowl.  Participants will warm up after the adventure with hot chocolate at the Nature at Night program.  All ages are welcome to the family friendly program, with parent supervision.  The fee is $5.00 per person.  Remember it will be dark and we will be walking on the trails in the woods.

Macrame Ornaments/Gift Tags

Join the City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation for the Macrame of the Month Club.  Create your own Macrame ornaments and gift tags.  These will make great gifts or decorations for the holiday season.  The fee is $15.00 and includes all supplies.  Participants can also enjoy the evening at the Lake Storey Pavilion.  Sign up with your friends, family and co-workers for a great time.   This is also a fun parent/guardian and child project.  Participants will create three Macrame ornaments to take home.

Aquatic Fitness Classes and Early Morning Lane Swim

Splash into Holiday Fitness with the City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation this season.  Hawthorne Municipal Pool is closed for renovations but the fitness festivities are in motion, thanks to great collaboration with Baymont Hotel and Knox College.  Enjoy early morning lane swim at Knox College on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6-8:00 a.m. at the campus pool.  Aquatic Fitness programs are offered at Baymont Hotel with AquaZumba getting you moving on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and AquaEase on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-9:30 a.m.   Take part in AquaMotion After 5 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Baymont Hotel as well.  Call City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation at 309/345-3683 for more information or stop by

Holiday Table Decorating

Fee:  $10.00 per person

Join the City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation for a fun evening of crafting at the Lake Storey Pavilion.  Participants will learn the basics of how to set a beautiful holiday table.  Gathering around the table on a holiday is all about food and family, but turn on the wow factor with low or no cost decorating ideas from crafty staffers.  Participants will create a set of napkin rings, a tealight centerpiece item and a reindeer place card holder, all using low cost items or materials from nature.  There is an opportunity to check out a couple of table displays for inspiration for your next gathering.  The fee is $10.00 per person and includes all supplies and crafting tools.  This is recommended for all ages, 7 years and up.  Youth should have adult assistance. Call City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation at 309/345-3683 for more information or stop by

Candyland Ball

Site:  Lake Storey Pavilion

Fee:  $67.00 per couple/$22.00 for each additional child

Holiday festivities start with this Knox County traditional, magical and memorable event.   Activities will include easy line dancing, dinner buffet, craft, seasonal songs, and a special visit from Santa.  This year the City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation is bringing back more of the traditional Candyland Ball dances and festivities.  You don’t want to miss this holiday tradition.  The meal is catered by Pizza Ranch and will include boneless wings, mashed potatoes, green beans, macaroni and cheese and beverages.  Participants will wish this night never ends as they create memories that will last a lifetime. This event includes a special visit from Santa, thanks to our connections at the North Pole.  The fee is $67.00 per couple and $22.00 for each additional child.  Registration is limited, and taken on a first come, first served basis.  Don’t miss this event.  Call City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation at 309/345-3683 for more information or stop by

December Craft Night Out

Enjoy a craft night out creating a festive snow globe ornament using your favorite picture.  Participants should bring a favorite printed picture (4 x 3 or smaller) or email a picture to the City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation to be printed out.  Pictures will be laminated and then included in the snow globe ornaments.  Ideas for pictures include a favorite person, place, home, pet and more.  The fee is $10 per person and includes all supplies and crafting tools.  Call City of Galesburg Parks and Recreation at 309/345-3683 for more information or stop by
