The Monmouth-Roseville varsity boys basketball team was back in action last night at The Shoebox of Monmouth-Roseville high school. The 5-3 Titans would be taking on the Titans… of West Hancock that is. In typical Monmouth-Roseville basketball fashion the game was physical and defense oriented, and came down to the final minutes. A game that would see West Hancock outlasted Monmouth-Roseville in the final seconds, dropping the Titans down to 5-4 on the season.

The first quarter got off to a fast start, as West Hancock and Monmouth-Roseville both traded threes in the opening seconds of the game. The pace of the game would slow down however, as both teams settled in on defense. West Hancock would cling to a 13-11 lead after the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Titans of M-R began to heat up. A switch back to the 2-3 zone on defense would hold West Hancock to just 6 in the quarter, while the offense poured on 17. The 11 point advantage in the 2nd brought the M-R Titans up to 28-19 at the halftime break.

West Hancock would come out of the first half break fighting, forcing turnovers, and cutting the M-R lead down to 4 with 5 minutes to go in the third. West Hancock would eventually take the lead 34-33 with under 2 minutes. Monmouth-Roseville would end the quarter on a strong note as forward Nico Avendano stole the ball and scored on a layup with just 15 seconds left, to cut the lead down to 1 before the final 8 minutes of play.

In the final quarter both teams would go back and fourth. West Hancock opened with two threes to stretch their lead, but M-R continued to fight, and quickly brought the lead down to just two with 4 minutes to play. With under one minute to go and leading by one, West Hancock threw the ball away and Jerome Jackson took it the other way for the game leading layup. Right after the miscue, Gavin Gratis for West Hancock knocked down a three to take the lead right back. With 5 seconds to play C.J Johnson was fouled as he went up for the game tying basket. He would sink both shots to tie the game, however on the opposite end West Hancock was fouled on the layup attempt with .5 seconds. They would make 1 of 2 to give West Hancock the 48-47 win.

In the statbook for the Titans, Nico Avendano led in scoring with 12 points, Jerome Jackson had 11, C.J. Johnson had 9, Nick Lewis-Bresnahan and Darrion Smith added 6, and Silas Braun added 3. Monmouth-Roseville falls to 5-4 overall on the season, they will be back at home for their next game against state ranked Columbia on Friday night.
