Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards Advises Being on Alert to Scammers

Share

Scams unfortunately seem to continue and are expanding across the country. While some scammers target certain audiences around a specific time frame, Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards advises to always be on alert and one scam to be mindful of is the online lonely-hearts scams on dating sites:

“We still get people who are stung through lonely hearts dating sites. People wanting money and they send it. It is not uncommon for us to get these complaints. There are sites out there where you can meet people to begin associations, relationships, whatever you want to call it, and occasionally people get preyed upon through these sites where somebody will put up a false picture and a false background and initiate some back and forth communication. They never seem to be local and are somewhere else and then ultimately can you help me with this, can you do this, can you do that, and before you know it there is money sent out there and personal information.”

As always, if something seems suspicious, report the encounter with local law enforcement.
