The Christmas season is in full swing and with that brings about the bad actors vying for personal information and a quick way to get some money. Investigator Officer Josh Kramer with the Monmouth Police Department reminds individuals partaking in online shopping to be mindful of potential fake emails you may receive:
“You are going to see in your emails that are going to look like emails from Amazon saying that your account has been hacked or PayPal that your account has been hacked. If you really look at the bottom of those emails, you are going to see that the return sender, the return address is not a legit Amazon address. When you get those, I would recommend that you delete it and go into your actual Amazon account or app and see if there is anything going on with it. There is randomly times when your account will have suspicious activity and they will let you know, but they are going to follow up with that actually in the app.”
In addition to fake emails, those bad actors might also send fake text messages. Investigator Officer Kramer advises not to click on the links provided in any suspicious email or text and call your local banker or law enforcement with any questions.
