Robert C. Townsend, 77, died peacefully on January 14, 2023 at St. Mary’s OSF in Galesburg.

Bobby was born in Galesburg on June 1, 1945 to Clair and Frieda Townsend. His childhood was spent fishing, hunting, playing in the creek, and other delights offered by country living, always accompanied by his faithful dog, Laddie. He enjoyed basketball, skating, bowling, art, skeet shooting, and dancing.

Bobby was an outdoorsman, with a special love for fishing. He fished with his dear son Brad, with many friends, and he taught his grandsons to fish. Bobby’s beloved wife, Linda, accompanied him on numerous fishing trips, especially to Little John Conservation Club.

Bobby and Linda Rogers tied the knot in March of 1965. They would have celebrated 58 years of loving marriage this spring.

Bobby was a graduate of Galesburg High School, a 20-year employee of OMC, and ultimately retired from NAIER.

Bobby was a life-long Cubs and avid Bears fan. Above all, he was a man who loved his family and enjoyed outings with friends, whether sports-related, grilling, or playing cards. He was quite the Pitch player.

Bobby is survived by wife, Linda; son, Steve Briggs (Beverly); two grandsons, Thomas and Dan Briggs; nephew, Tim Townsend; and daughter-in-law, Laura Townsend, the wife of Brad, who passed away in 2011. In addition to his beloved son, Bobby was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Duane.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be Thursday, January 19th at 3 pm at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory, Knoxville. Visitation begins one hour prior to services. Pastor Andrew Wingo will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Bobby are urged to donate to the Knox County Humane Society or Galesburg Rescue Mission. Online condolences may be sent via www.hurd-hendricksfuneralhome.com
