Clydesdales Return to American Home of Alexis

Share

Alexis, Illinois is the American Home of the Clydesdale. In the late 1800s, the American Clydesdale first settled in Alexis, which became historically known across the world. Over the past 50 years, the gentle giants only existed as a memory until Alexis native Kyle Flowers, along with Sam Medhurst, formed F & M Clydesdales and decided to bring Clydesdales back to West Central Illinois. Flowers shares the history behind Alexis’ claim to fame of the American Clydesdales:

“One of the founders of Alexis was named Robert Holloway. He was a Colonel in the military and from what I have gathered, it was kind of the military pension back in the day to give unsettled land to ex-military and Holloway’s land plot was around Alexis. He and another gentleman by the name of Alexander, founded Alexis and Holloway was the one that brought Clydesdales to Alexis and that became their home and became internationally known and well respected across the world. I kind of thought it was a shame that we only use it as our past. I thought it was a great opportunity and a shame that we don’t have anything that is Clydesdale related even though we are the American Home of the Clydesdale, so it just seemed like an obvious opportunity to give it a try.”

In the future, Flowers anticipates the Clydesdales making public appearances and offering wagon rides.
