House Passes Bill Requiring Pregnancy Related Expenses Be Split 50/50

Legislation passed by the Illinois House this week ensures both parents split pregnancy related costs. The pregnancy expenses act is sponsored by Representative Margaret Croake of Chicago. It lets a woman file a court claim to share medical bills and health insurance premiums with the father or intended parent of the baby.

“We all know that the cost of raising a child tends to fall disproportionately on a woman. We are talking about in some instances thousands and thousands of dollars, even when you have insurance.”

Croake says this would also require splitting the cost of an abortion if that’s what the woman decides to do. The bill now moves to the senate for a vote.
