April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Unfortunately, if a conflict arises, a lot of times a domestic case is reported and Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards says how those responding react can affect an outcome:
“If things are getting that difficult in the home dynamic, there are resources, counseling services, we do have Bridgeway in town, or there is always the potential to talk to the school guidance counselor. We run into situations where kids are not happy with their home-life or whether they feel it is too restrictive. In some cases you get runaways or kids refusing to go home or they want to go live with a non-custodial parent. We tend to get involved in that because they are suppose to be in another place there are not. We run into these situations where we are trying to find youngsters that don’t want to be found and sometimes uncooperative. When they are located, if they are willing to go back home that is fine and we are completed at that point, if they are not, we get a crisis intervention team to come in and try and come up with a solution to make it livable for all parties.”
Child Abuse Awareness Month has been in observed each April since 1983.
