Here’s the WMOI/WRAM Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 9, 2023:
The Monmouth-Roseville Titan Athlete of the Week is senior girls soccer player, Rosa Perez. The Titans girls team has gotten off to the best start in their short program history and that has a lot to do with Rosa. In two wins last week, she only allowed a total of one goal. Rosa posted 12 saves and a shutout in a 3-0 victory over East Peoria.
The United Red Storm Athlete of the Week is freshman baseball player, Ian Leffler. Ian contributed to a pair of Red Storm wins last week, with his arm and his bat. He In three games, he went 5-12, with 5 rbis and 2 extra base hits. Ian used his arm to get a win over Louisiana, Missouri, going 6.2 innings, giving up only three hits and two earned runs, racking up eleven strikeouts along the way.
The West Central Heat Athlete of the Week is senior baseball player, Landon Winters. As the temperatures rise this spring, so is Landon’s batting average. In four games last week, he went 5-14, scoring three runs and driving in 6 more runs. Landon also blasted his first home run of the season, as well.
The Galesburg Silver Streak Athlete of the Week is senior track and field athlete, Michael Moreno. Michael had some fantastic finishes in two uber-competetive meets last week. At the Springfield Solon Open, he earned a 5th place in the shot put and was even better in the discus, where he placed 1st. At the Moline Gene Shipley Meet, he was 6th in the shot put and 3rd in the discus events.
The Abingdon-Avon Tornado Athlete of the Week. This week the spotlight shines on sophomore softball player, Taylor Ford. The ladies won all three games they were able to play last week and Taylor had the hottest bat on team. She went 7-10, scored nine runs and knocked in five more. Taylor hit for power, as well, smashing a double and two triples.
