Hill CC Inmate Found Guilty of Staff Assault

On June 26th, following a bench trial, an inmate from Hill Correctional Center was convicted of aggravated battery. The Knox County State’s Attorney’s Office presented compelling evidence that William Brown assaulted a correctional officer while she was performing her duties within a housing wing on June 19, 2022. Brown forcefully grabbed the officer, causing her to be thrown to the ground. Fortunately, another inmate intervened and positioned himself between Brown and the officer, enabling her to exit the housing wing and seek assistance.

The trial resulted in a guilty verdict for a Class 2 felony, which typically carries a sentencing range of three to seven additional years in the Department of Corrections. However, due to Brown’s eligibility for an extended term sentence, he may face a maximum of 14 additional years. Importantly, this sentence will be served consecutively to the sentences he is currently serving.

Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin presented the State’s case during the trial. The sentencing phase is scheduled to take place in August.
