Study Finds Most Iowa Farmland Is Debt-Free

A study finds 80 percent of Iowa farmland is owned free and clear of debt. That’s especially true for older farmers. The study, by, Iowa State University, however, finds it’s not usually the case for younger farmers.

“The beginning farmers and the younger generation of landowners are disproportionately relying on loans.”

Wendong Zhang did the research for Iowa State. He says the debt-free ownership is fairly recent, thanks to higher commodity prices and government payments. A study finds most of Iowa’s farmland is owned free and clear of debt.
