On Friday, the Junior Cattle and Steer show showcased the hard work of many area junior livestock showmen. Show judge Jaks Hlas, a cattleman from Iowa, says there was a lot of quality at the show.
“Eathington kids brought a really nice one today Angus heifer, that just for me when she hit the ring to come and start was one that just kind of fit everything I talked about really complete, really good built, but then also had some pieces that we’re going to take on to the next generation.”
When Hlas is not in the show ring, he is a sales rep for Merk Animal Health working with veterinarians and producers better their herds. He says that in the cattle industry there show and production industry are two different worlds.
“The individuals that did really well today, that’s not to say those cattle aren’t gonna go out and perform, but you know, some of those cattle that sat towards the bottom end of the classes still are gonna go out and produce for those individuals,” said Hlas. He adds, “just not be discouraged, even though maybe they didn’t have the result today because some of the best animals we have at home weren’t the best in the show ring but when we put them out and got them bred the right way, they went out and made us the next show animals.”
