Frank O. Unger, 80, Knoxville, Illinois, died peacefully with his family by his side, Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at home.

Frank was born June 29, 1942 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Hugh M. and Margaret C. (Bower) Unger. After graduating high school, Frank began a career with The Burlington Northern Railroad (now BNSF) as a carman.He worked in both Galesburg and a few years in Centralia, Illinois.After 42 years of faithful service, he retired as a car foreman in 2002. Frank married the love of his life, Carol Mae Mulica, on September 10, 1966 in Galesburg, Illinois.

Frank is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol Unger of Knoxville; one daughter, Christine Irene (Mark Mason) Unger-Mason of Maquon, Illinois; and two grandsons, Wyatt Frank Mason and Nolan Carl Mason. Frank is also survived by two brothers, Charles (Susan) Unger and Neill (Jan) Unger both of Galesburg; one sister, Louise (Louie) Doney of Galesburg; a brother-in-law, Rollie Potts of East Moline, Illinois; seven nephews; and four nieces. Along with his parents Frank was preceded in death by one sister, Joan Potts; and one nephew.

Frank had a strong work ethic and enjoyed keeping busy. He was an avid fisherman and gardener, loved to spend time mowing his yard, and enjoyed playing cards, especially Pitch. Family was important to Frank, he faithfully attended all his grandsons’ school and sporting events and generally enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved nice cars and cooking on his grill. Frank and Carol were members of the Knoxville First United Methodist Church and was a faithful supporter of the Knoxville Community Food Pantry. He never wanted a child to go hungry. Frank will be long remembered for his big smile, onery personality, and that he was always willing to lend a hand to those who needed help.

Cremation has been accorded. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 2:00 PM at the Knoxville First United Methodist Church, Knoxville, Illinois. Rev. Dave Mustain will officiate. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Memorial contributions may be made in Frank’s memory to the Knoxville Community Food Pantry at the Knoxville United Methodist Church.
