With hot and humid conditions expected for the remainder of the week in the local area, Monmouth Fire Chief Casey Rexroat offers tips to prevent illnesses related to the heat:
“We just want to make sure people are being safe out there and thinking about it before you go outside and do something that will overexert yourself and could cause heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or something like that. Make sure that you are wearing loose, light clothing, don’t wear the dark colors the next few days because that will make it worse for you. Drink plenty of water. Take breaks often, go and sit in the air conditioning if you can. Also, be aware of some of the signs, if you start just not feeling good in general, you start feeling maybe sick to your stomach or a really bad headache, maybe your skin gets really hot and dry, maybe your pulse picks up, you start feeling like you are running a marathon and your pulse is just going crazy, go inside and take a break. If you need to call an ambulance and we will come and help you, but a lot of times if you just go inside and take a break for a little while, it will be okay and you will start to feel better.”
As for your pets, Chief Rexroat suggests making sure they have plenty of water, access to shade throughout the day if they are outside, and limit trips in the car as the car heats up very quickly when the temperatures are this high.
