George W. Campbell, 69, of Swansea, IL, formerly of Roseville, IL, passed away at 6:24 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2023, in his home surrounded by his family. George was born on December 25, 1953 in Macomb, IL, to Charles and Faye (Faylor) Campbell. He was raised and educated in Bushnell and Macomb, graduating from Macomb High School in 1971. He started his career with the state of Illinois as a building/grounds maintainer and continued his employment until his retirement in 2012. He also served with the Illinois National Guard and spent 42 years in the National Guard building in Macomb.

George married Sandy Mack on September 7, 1973 in Berwick, Illinois, and she survives. They celebrated their early 50th anniversary on May 20, 2023 with many of their family and friends.

George’s faith was the most important thing to him. Next came his family. George LOVED to sing for His Lord! He enjoyed taking care of the yard. George collected Campbell’s Soup items for many years. Although he was very bashful as a young adult, he “came out of his shell” and never missed a chance to talk to people, especially about the Lord. George always found comfort in music. Whether listening or singing, he LOVED gospel music. George was in the IL National Guard for 20 years. He had a strong bond with his guard buddies. Many traveled to see him in his last days, which delighted him. He had more than sixty people come to see him in the last three weeks of his life. George commented often, “I didn’t know I had so many friends.” He attended the North Alton Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memory are: wife, Sandy; son, Craig (Jeanie) Campbell of Smithshire; Minh (Lan) Doan of Grimes, IA; grandchildren, Kyle Campbell of Stronghurst, Shaila Campbell of Oquawka, Evie & Jovie Campbell of Smithshire, Grace and Emma Doan of Grimes, IA; brothers, Dallas Campbell of Bushnell, David Campbell of Macomb, Charles (Wilma) Campbell of Havana and a host of family and friends also survive.

George was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Doug Campbell; sister, Jessie Shumaker; brothers, Vern Campbell, Jim Campbell; in-laws, Buell & Veda Mack.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 7, 2023, at the Roseville Community Center, Roseville, IL. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am-1:00 pm prior to the service. Interment will be in the Roseville Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; Helping Hands Food Pantry of Roseville or the North Alton Baptist Church, Alton, IL.
