United Red Storm Sports Affected by Heat Wave

Story by Kadin Rogers

Many sporting events that were scheduled for this week at United High School have been cancelled due to the extreme heat that is currently impacting the Western Illinois area. One team at United that has been able to get their games in however is the Red Storm volleyball squad. United’s Junior Varsity and Varsity teams both opened up their season on Monday with a home contest against Bushnell-Prairie City, with the Red Storm making quick work of the Lady Spartans, winning in two sets by scores of 25-5 and 25-10. Up next for United volleyball is a home match against ROWVA-Williamsfield tonight, before taking part in the Macomb Tournament over the weekend. Other fall sports have had a slow week, with all Golf and Cross Country contests at United being cancelled or moved to different dates. Athletic Director Jeremy Sharp discussed how the Red Storm have had to adapt to the extreme heat, naming bus transportation as one of the leading factors in the decision to postpone contests.

As temperatures are projected to start decreasing in the coming days, United hopes to get back into the swing of things with their golf and cross country programs, as well as kicking off the Red Storm football season tomorrow night at Mercer County.
