Harvest is already underway in some areas of Illinois. According to the most recent USDA Illinois Crop Progress Report, two percent of corn has been harvested. As farmers in western Illinois start to get ready to begin their harvest season, West Central FS Agronomist Brendan Marshall gives a local crop report.
“Things look good, depending on where you are at. Just driving around, I’ve been in quite a few fields- corns changing quite a bit. The planting date has a lot to do with it. Earlier planted corn, and earlier seasoned hybrids are really starting to turn. I have a couple of growers who have started to chop silage and said their silage is pretty decent. Soybeans, same way, are starting to turn, and a lot of disease is showing up. I have found some sun death, there is a little bit of white mold in different areas.”
According to the most recent report, 58 percent of both the corn and soybean crop was rated good to excellent.
