Martin LaVerne “Termite” Thurman, 91, of Abingdon, died at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in Roseville Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born November 15, 1931, in Warren County, the son of Everett Leon and Ethel Irene (Schisler) Thurman. He married B. Darlene Abel on March 19, 1952, in Abingdon. She preceded him in death July 14, 2005, after more than 53 years of marriage.

He is survived by five children, Steven L. Thurman of Salem, Oregon, Lawrence P. (Peggy) Thurman of Independence, Missouri, Leslie R. (Margaret) Thurman of Abingdon, Teresa D. (Russell) Ford of Macomb, and Michele M. Thurman of Burlington, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren with two more expected in 2024; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Paul, Lawrence, and Donald Thurman; and a sister, Lucille Robinson.

Termite worked as a siding and window contractor for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, woodworking, and reading Westerns.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War.

Cremation will be accorded. Private family graveside memorial service will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with Military Honors. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to PAWS Animal Shelter in Fort Madison, Iowa. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services of Abingdon is honored to serve the family.
