Military obesity rates are on the rise and it’s creating problems in both recruiting and retention for the Defense Department. Sixty-eight percent of active-duty service members are either overweight or obese, and eating disorders in the military increased by approximately seventy-nine percent between 2017 and 2021. That’s according to a new report from the American Security Project. The rapid increase in the rate of overweight troops creates concerns over military readiness while obesity is also a primary contributor to in-service injuries and medical discharges.
