Monmouth Fire Chief Casey Rexroats Offers Tips as You Decorate This Holiday Season

Share

As the temperatures start to turn colder and the holiday season is here, Monmouth Fire Chief Casey Rexroat reminds homeowners to take safety precautions while decorating your home:

“We want to just remind people that when you are actually setting up for Christmas right now with the tree and lights and everything else, to be very careful in what you are doing. Around the holidays we like to use more candles, that is an open flame and a potential hazard. When you are doing the decorations, you want to make sure and keep anything that is flammable away from that open flame, whether it is a candle or fireplace. With the lights, you want to check them over real quick just to make sure none of the cords are frayed and there are no wires showing that could start a fire.”

To ensure a happy a fire-safe holiday season, the National Fire Protection Association recommends using clips and not nails to hang lights, keeping decorations away from windows and doors, and turning lights off and blowing out candles before leaving home or going to bed.
