As the end of the year is near and tax season is right around the corner, remain diligent and be aware of IRS scams. Monmouth Police Department Investigator Josh Kramer offers tips in identifying those callers impersonating agents or even local law enforcement:
“The biggest thing is to remember that the government is not ever going to tell you to go to the store and buy gift cards, they are not going to ask you for payment over the phone, they are not going to be demanding, they are not going to pressure you. Those are all signs of it being a scam. They will pretend to be somebody, they will pressure you, and then there is going to be a prize or a problem, and it is just going to continue on. The other one is law enforcement agencies, no law enforcement agency is going to call and tell you that you have outstanding warrants, that you need to turn yourself in, or that you need to pay for bonds, that is just not how we conduct business.”
Investigator Kramer also says to be on the lookout for letters in the mail claiming to be from the IRS and to contact the IRS directly and confirm any information as they will not send a letter saying you have unclaimed money.
