Here’s the WMOI/WRAM Athletes of the Week for the week ending Dec. 10th, 2023:

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan Athlete of the Week is senior wrestler, Gabe Ortiz-Mora. Gabe brought home some hardware from his first tournament over the past weekend. He placed 4th in the 157 pound weight class at the highly competitive PORTA Rex Avery Invitational. In a tournament that had 31 schools taking part, Gabe went (2-2), getting a shutout win and a pinfall victory.

The United Red Storm Athlete of the Week is sophomore boys basketball player, Ian Leffler. Ian’s strong play in the post has been a major factor in the Red Storm 9-game winning streak. In three wins last week, he averaged 11 points and 9 rebounds per game. Ian’s physical play in the paint allowed him to get an average of 8 of those 11 points close to the basket.

The West Central Heat Athlete of the Week is senior girls basketball player, Shelby Bowman. In a win over West Prairie at the United Holiday Tournament, Shelby went over the 2,000 point mark for her career, the first-ever with that total at West Central High School. Last week she put up 39 points and 9 rebounds in an important win over Annawan. Shelby nearly posted a triple-double in a win against Ridgewood with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 9 steals.

The Galesburg Silver Streak Athlete of the Week is sophomore girls bowler, Maddie Fowler. Maddie burned up the lanes at the United Township Panthers Invitational at Highland Park Bowl in Moline. She rolled a 6-game score of 1185. That was the 4th highest total in the tournament. Maddie also had the 7th highest single game score of 236.

The Abingdon-Avon Tornado Athlete of the Week is senior boys basketball player, Kellen Hook. In two games last week, Kellen averaged 17.5 points and 3 rebounds. He’s really starting to heat up from beyond the 3-point arc, nailing 9 shots in just 12 attempts for an amazing 75%. Kellen is also contributing on the defensive end as well, averaging nearly 2 steals a contest.
