USDA meteorologist, Brad Rippey, saying that the current cold wave is putting stress on livestock, but conditions are about to improve.
“The concern there with back to back snow storms, followed by the bitter cold, we did see temperatures dipping into the minus 20 degree range in some of those snow affected areas. The combination of snow followed by bitter cold, certainly a stresser for livestock, not a critical issue, but at least a short term concern. It is tough to keep weight on those animals when they are shivering to stay warm. As warm weather returns later this week, that should become less of a concern as things get back to more normal cattle operations.”
