In a rocking display of musical fashion, the Western Illinois University Marching Leathernecks secured a top-six spot in the Division I category of the popular Metallica Competition. Facing off against prominent universities, their performances hit in the national competition, captivating audiences since September 2023.
Metallica invited marching bands of all levels across the nation to participate in a competition where bands can showcase their skills by crafting unique and impressive performances of Metallica’s music.
Hal Leonard provided each band with a library of marching band charts of Metallica songs via sheetmusicdirect.com. The bands with the most outstanding performances will be awarded musical equipment for their school program, sponsored by Metallica and partners, and WIU is still in the running.
“The Marching Leathernecks are some of the best students on campus and it is great to see them be recognized for their hard work and the great things they regularly do,” WIU Associate Director of Bands Matt Thomas said.
The Marching Leathernecks consist of students from almost every discipline on the WIU campus. These students have a strong commitment to excellence that has become an integral part of the University’s legacy and the Marching Leathernecks. The band is renowned for its powerful sound and unique innovations, which have impressed audiences throughout the Midwest. The Marching Leathernecks regularly provide support for many local and regional events and enjoy a close bond with the Macomb campus community.
