Here’s the WMOI/WRAM Athletes of the Week for the week ending Jan. 21, 2024:

​The Monmouth-Roseville Titan Athlete of the Week is senior boys wrestler, Bawi Thang. Bawi captured a 3rd place medal at the highly competitive 22-school Orion Bob Mitton Invitational. Wrestling in the 106 pound division, he went (3-1) on the day, garnering 1 pin and toughed out 2 decisions. Bawi is having a fantastic season so far, getting very near the 30 win mark.

The United Red Storm Athlete of the Week is senior boys wrestler, Jake McElwee. Jake had a great weekend at the highly competitive 22-school Orion Bob Mitton Invitational. He went (4-1) for the weekend in the 157 pound weight class, bringing home a 3rd place medal. Three of the four wins for Jake came by the way of pinfall and his only loss came to the eventual champion.

The West Central Heat Athlete of the Week is senior girls basketball player, Sam Meyer. Sam’s play on the court and senior leadership were important parts of the Heat’s run to a Lincoln Trail Conference tournament title run. She averaged 7 points in the semifinal and championship game. Sam had 8 points in the final and ripped down five rebounds in the semifinal victory.

The Galesburg Silver Streak Athlete of the Week is senior boys wrestler, Rocky Almendarez. Rocky continued his great season at the 22-school Orion Bob Mitton Invitational. He went a perfect (3-0) for the weekend, earning a 1st place medal in the 126 pound weight class. For the season, Rocky has only one loss and has been ranked in the top 10 across the state at 126 pounds.

The Abingdon-Avon Tornado Athlete of the Week is senior boys basketball player, Carter Redfern. Carter was very instrumental in 2 Tornado wins last week. He led the team in scoring with 18 points in a win over ROWVA/Williamsfield and contributed 10 points in a victory over Galva. Carter averaged 13 points and 3.3 assists in 3 games last week and also led the team in steals.
