Galesburg Coaching Legend Retiring After Nearly Half a Century

Share

For the first time since 1978, the Galesburg Silver Streak girls basketball program will be led by someone other than Evan Massey. In somewhat surprising news on Monday, Massey submitted his letter of resignation to the Galesburg School District administration. Last December, Massey garnered his 1,000th career victory, making him only the 3rd girls basketball coach in IHSA girls basketball history to achieve that number. He ends his 46 year head coaching career with 1,018 wins against just 397 losses, for an amazing winning percentage of nearly 72%. He’ll finish merely two wins behind Fenwick High School’s David Power’s total of 1,020 wins and 135 wins behind Chicago Marshall’s Dorothy Gators in first place all-time.

Massey’s Galesburg teams finished 2nd in the state of Illinois in 1999, third in 1996 and three fourth-place trophies in 1997, 2000 and 2001. He also guided the Streaks to 13 Western Big Conference championships, which is more than any other school in the Big Six history. Even more amazing is the fact that Galesburg has had only two losing seasons since 1987, in 2017-18 and and 2008-09.

Massey is going out on a high note, as the Streaks went (26-7) this past season, losing a regional championship game to Morton on February 15th. That’s the 20th time a Massey-coached team has won at least 25 games in a season. Current assistant coach and former player under Massey, Lexi Daniels-DeMott will take over in the interim until a new head coach is named, which is possibley expected in mid-March.
