Lake Storey in Galesburg, Illinois has reopened for water access, effective on Saturday, March 2, 2024. Out of an abundance of caution, the lake was previously closed to water access while the Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) remediated a diesel fuel leak from their nearby surplus property that had affected the lake.
The contractor hired by CMS has now completed the remediation efforts at the lake, and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has concluded its assessment of the lake and found no evidence that would suggest the city could not reopen it for public usage.
“We are pleased to be able to reopen Lake Storey to water access,” said Fire Chief Randy Hovind. “While remediation cannot guarantee that 100% of the diesel fuel that entered the lake has been removed, the contractor has done a tremendous job, and will remain nearby remediating neighboring property if any additional needs arise.”
CMS expects remediation efforts on surrounding properties to conclude by Friday, March 8, 2024. The City of Galesburg will remain in close contact with the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, and appreciates the collaboration throughout the process, resulting in a prompt and effective remediation.
