50 local high school students through the Galesburg Area Vocational Center, which provides career and technical education opportunities, will be competing at the SkillsUSA State Competition in Peoria, shares Knox County Area Partnership President Ken Springer:
“SkillsUSA is like a varsity sport for career and technical education, so when high school students are going and they are learning how to weld or learning how to do carpentry or culinary arts and taking classes at the Vocational Center for those different career fields; what SkillsUSA is that it gives those students a chance to compete. There are Regional, State, and National level competition and Friday, April 26th, Peoria is hosting the state competition for Skills USA. We are really excited, the Galesburg Area Vocational Center sent 22 students to compete at state last year and this year they have 50 students that are going to compete at the state level, which is an awesome sign that more students are embracing this program and there are more students involved in career and technical education.”
National competition for the SkillsUSA Championships will be held in Atlanta this June.
