Mrs. Helen Frances Dunn, 100 years young, of Galesburg passed away at 9:51 am, Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Seminary Manor Nursing Home.

Helen was born April 5, 1924, in Monmouth, Illinois, the daughter of Asa Wallace and Laverne Marcia (Parker) Young. She married William “Ray” Dunn on August 7, 1955, and together they shared forty-nine years before his passing on January 22, 2004.

Helen’s family was made up of her three stepsons, Clifford, Steve and Rex Dunn; her brother, Harold Parker (the late Doris) Young of Monmouth, nieces and nephews, Larry (Bonnie) McConnell of Florida, Richard (Maggie) McConnell of Louisiana, Jean (Larry) Dorrell of Kentucky, Martha (Larry) Honaker of Ohio, Marcee (Jim) Hudson of Monmouth and Patricia (Mark) Hasenstein of Peoria, Illinois; thirteen great nieces and nephews and several great great nieces and nephews. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ray, her sister, Mary Alice McConnell and two nephews, John Young and Tom McConnell.

Helen graduated from Monmouth High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Monmouth College and later earned her master’s degree from Western Illinois University. She started her thirty-year teaching career with the Kirkwood school as a math teacher and retired from Galesburg High School in 1980.

Helen and Ray were members of Lake Bracken County Club where they were avid golfers. In 1970 and 1971 she placed first place both years in golf tournaments at Bracken. They both placed first in a district golf tournament and were together highlighted in the local newspaper. Between the two of them they had several golf titles under their belt.

Helen served in the US Navy during WWII and was a lifetime faithful member of the Coldbrook Christian Church.

Visitation will be 12:30-2:00 pm Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Services will follow at 2:00 pm at the chapel with Pastor Rick Warren officiating. The burial will be in Mosher Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Shriners Hospital for Children. Online condolences may be offed at www.h-p-w.com
