Abingdon-Avon Tornado Spring Sports Season Filled with Success

Share

The Abingdon-Avon Tornado spring sports season was filled with many success stories. The softball squad won the most games in one season since the Abingdon and Avon school districts consolidated in 2013. The Lady Tornadoes went (20-12), losing to class 1A state finals qualifier and fellow Lincoln Trail Conference member Ridgewood in the regional championship.

The A-Town baseball team went (17-9) and tied with United and Mercer County for the Lincoln Trail Conference West Division title.

The boys and girls track squad both had success, as well. The girls track team was dominated by a young nucleus, with the future looking bright. The Tornado boys had Tyler Condreay qualify for the class 1A state finals in three different events in the 100 meter dash, long jump and ran a leg on the 4×200 meter relay team, with Grant Rogers, Johnny Simmons and Carter Stroot.

The Lincoln Trail Conference will be without Mercer County starting this fall, as Mer Co has moved to the Three Rivers Athletic Conference, switching spots with Bureau Valley High School in Manlius, Illinois, located just east of Annawan. The Storm will join the Large School side of the football LincolnLand Conference, which is in its second year of existence. Abingdon-Avon Athletic Director Reid Kelso spoke about the addition and subtraction from the LTC on the Wednesday WRAM Morning Show.

Since A-Town is on the small school side of the Lincoln Land, they will not have Bureau Valley on next year’s football schedule. The Tornadoes division cross-over game is against Brimfield/Elmwood.
