With all the scams circulating these days; cash prize scams, door to door solicitors, grandparent scams, social media scams, or even imposter scams, Josh Kramer, Investigator with the Monmouth Police Department, offers steps to take if you have fell victim to a scam:
“If you think you have been a victim, the first thing, I would call your banking institutions, make a report to them. They are going to want to know what information you provided, which is what we are going to want to know, but I want to shut down all your financial information first. That would be the first thing I would tell you if you hadn’t called them anyway, make them aware of what is going on because they can look and see if your Social Security number gets ran, your phone number gets ran, if any of your bank account numbers get ran; they can see that pretty instantly and shut that down. Definitely, when it comes to debit cards, the banking industry has come a long way in monitoring your purchases. If all of a sudden you are showing that you are making purchases in some third world country, they are putting a hold on that, calling you, they are wanting to verify that.”
Additionally, Investigator Kramer says when your devices have updates that need to occur, make sure those happen as they are constantly adding support to protect your personal information from scammers.
